Collage Workshop

Adult collage making workshop designed for all levels from novice to expert! Come join Seattle Artist, Musician and Educator, Sean Williams for two hours of collage fun.

Use a collection of vintage books, magazines and other materials to create some one of a kind works of art. A 15 minute intro covering basic collage practices and techniques followed by an hour and a half of making along side other artists. The class will wrap up with a group reflection where each person (if they want to) can show their work and share their process, ask questions and give respectful feedback. We believe having time for reflection and conversation is important to creating community and learning from each other.

Participants are welcome to bring snacks and beverages of their choice.

Some collage materials may not be appropriate for young people so we would prefer to have all participants over 18.

When: Sunday November 24th 1-3pm
Cost:

A Taste Of Handbuilding

A Taste of Handbuilding

We’ll introduce a variety of clay handbuilding techniques by building several pieces. Your pieces will be glazed and fired with a nice white glaze and returned to you.

Techniques learned will include: pounding, stretching, piercing and rolling clay into slabs and coils. We'll build little dwellings, create openings by cutting holes, etc. We'll form thin slabs into little ‘shark shot’ espresso cups. Smooth slab handles onto funky slab mugs. We will pinch clay into roundish little pots.

You will be encouraged to get as much experience as possible with each technique. The emphasis of class is not perfecting any one technique. We’re getting as many experiences as possible handling clay. Clay body used will be red terracotta clay.

Learn to manipulate terracotta clay and create basic forms. Your work will be returned to you fired and

glazed with a nice white glaze.

When: November 15, 5:30-8pm

Cost: $85 per class

Open Arts Night

Come join us at our monthly arts night, a collaboration from Acorn Collective and Siderail Collective.  All are welcome for this combined open mic and visual arts activity!

What is an Open Arts Night? We'll have a guided art activity combined with an open mic! The art activity will be different each month, but expect things like watercolor, pottery, sketching, etc. While people are working on their artwork, people can also share music, poetry, or any other creative work! If you would prefer to bring your own art project to work on please feel free.

November:

This month we will feature a watercolor workshop led by art educator Jenny Davidson.  We will focus on making small cards and tags that can be used for gift giving, entertaining, or sparking your creativity. Come and unleash your inner artistic talents, no experience necessary!  As our days become shorter, darkness makes space for creativity – you can take these watercolor techniques with you into winter - and continue to practice with a warm cup of tea. What better way to step into winter than music, art, and a warm cup of tea. A short lesson will be followed by open studio time in an inspiring atmosphere.

The open mic welcomes all performers of music, spoken word or other art forms.  Please share! Our featured performer will be local singer songwriter Asia, who will share her beautiful songs on ukulele.

We'll get started at 7:30pm. We are asking for a $10 suggested donation to help cover the costs of art supplies, etc.

You're welcome to BYOB, but we will also have snacks and drinks available for additional donation.

All gender identities are welcome to attend!

Raku: 2 sessions; clay handbuilding & glazing/firing

Raku: 2 sessions; clay handbuilding & glazing/firing

Raku is an ancient Japanese firing technique. This workshop includes two sessions. The first session we learn beginning hand building techniques with raku clay. Syd provides inspiration and help with technique.

A week or so later, in the second session, we glaze our pieces and submit them to the kiln’s flame in a fire of transformation. The pieces come out of the kiln very hot, and are smoked in sawdust and scrubbed clean once cooled.

Outstanding colors and wild crackle patterns emerge. It’s terrific to experience this process together and share it amongst the group.

When: October 11th, 5:30-8pm (handbuilding) AND October 20th, 11:30-4pm (raku firing)

Cost: $125 for the 2 sessions

Hands On! Workshop | Mitsuro Hikime with the Seattle Metals Guild

Hands On! Workshop | Mitsuro Hikime with the Seattle Metals Guild

Join members and friends of The Seattle Metals Guild for a two-hour hands-on evening with traditional Japanese wax working, with Guild member and instructor:
Jennifer Stenhouse of Little Metal Foxes.

Mitsuro Hikime is a Japanese modeling wax that creates exceptionally delicate detail that resembles the most exquisite texture of organic material like grass, hair, or flowing silk. The wax is made up of a mixture of pine resin and bees wax, along with other waxes, depending on the recipe you use. You can buy it pre-made and focus on design or make your own wax to your preferences. Much like taffy, the cold wax is gently warmed and pulled until the desired effect is created.

We will begin with the history, uses and elements for the recipe. Demonstrations will include tips and tricks used by the pros to create patterns for wax models. We will work on improving wax skills by tackling more sensitive designs and patterns, while focusing on practice rings or accent components.

Then we will focus on tools, tips, and tricks that result in good wax models, including spruing and other prep for casting. Finished wax models can be cast yourself, or sent to your caster. Please note that casting is not included!

    • How to get the texture you want

    • How to form models successfully

    • How to prepare models for spruing and casting

    • Loads of tips and tricks for finishing

    • A small container with a watertight lid

    • A sketch book or other note taking supplies

  • Jennifer's Kitsune Mitsuro Wax will be available for purchase during the workshop or can be purchased in advance from LionPunchForge.com.

Additional wax working tools can be found, ordered, created or purchased locally at hardware stores. These will be discussed. The tools listed below are helpful for working in your studio and at home to create wax models. In this workshop, we will have some on hand for you to share and try.

    • Parchment paper

    • A soft paint brush

    • Small clay, polymer, or PMC working tools

    • Small sharp scissors like embroidery shears

    • A pack of craft needles and a pin vise

    • Wax working or dental tools

    • Smooth steel or aluminum mandrels

Hot tool options include dental tools and an alcohol lamp filled with denatured alcohol, an electric dental or Digital Wax working pen (these can be found on eBay or

Amazon. Jennifer always looks for one that is about $50 and has a US electrical plug,) or a WaxMax battery powered hot tool (Rio Grande Jewelry Supply.) A hot tool is essential for connecting waxes together, but is not necessary to benefit from this short introductory workshop. Again, we will have a few things on hand for you to share and try.
Note that we won't have outlets available for your use in this workshop.

Registered guests, join us prior to the event's start at 5pm for light refreshments, or bring something to eat before we get started. Multiple delicious restaurants with carry out are just a stone’s throw away.

5pm  - Light refreshments and optional BYO dinner
6-8pm - Hands On! time

Please note:

This event is being held in a non-accessible building. A long staircase to the second story must be climbed to reach the collective.

Parking is available in the lot just North of Side Rail Collective and Georgetown Pizza, as well as on the street. The entrance to Side Rail is on the North side of the building.

Guild members, gain access to special Member ticket pricing using the special Access Code we recently emailed to you.
