Pay It Forward
A show of the circle of generosity and growth
Artist receptions:
Saturday April 12th - 4-8 pm
Saturday May 10th 4-8 pm
‘Paying it forward’ is the art of keeping generosity flowing. It honors the help you've received in life and the people who have supported you—not by recognizing or thanking them directly—by passing that kindness on in an ever-widening circle.
For Anita Lehmann, that ever-widening circle has been her students. This show brings together the work of artist, award-winning illustrator, and 35 year arts educator Anita Lehmann and a selection of her students.
Anita says:
" My teachers, my wise spirits, have guided me, and now I have the privilege of paying it forward through my own teaching. This show is a beautiful representation of that cycle—my lessons and passion reflected in these talented students. I look forward to seeing them carry it forward, continuing the ripple of generosity and inspiration.

The event will be hosted at Side Rail Collective (in Georgetown) every 2nd Thursday of the month!
This Month:
For this months open arts night, we are combining lullabies and the ancient art of Scrimshaw.
Side Rails own Kate Cudney will be introducing the ancient art of Scrimshaw as we cycle the hundred-year-old ivory from our defunct piano.
Come join this unique event. Make art in community while enjoying the music of local singer songwriters including ourfeatured performer, Auntie Death:
Auntie Death (they/them she/her) recollects the grungy music of 80s/90s Seattle and cultivates a comforting sound of dissonance, quiet-loud dynamics, sadness, haunting memories, and introspection.
Auntie Death is here. here to sing you lilting lullabies when you are restless and tired. here to bring you your coziest blanket melody when you’re sad. here to hold and steady your hand with driving rhythm when you’re happy.
We hope to see you all Thursday!!

A Taste Of Handbuilding
A Taste of Handbuilding
We’ll introduce a variety of clay handbuilding techniques by building several pieces. Your pieces will be glazed and fired with a nice white glaze and returned to you.
Techniques learned will include: pounding, stretching, piercing and rolling clay into slabs and coils. We'll build little dwellings, create openings by cutting holes, etc. We'll form thin slabs into little ‘shark shot’ espresso cups. Smooth slab handles onto funky slab mugs. We will pinch clay into roundish little pots.
You will be encouraged to get as much experience as possible with each technique. The emphasis of class is not perfecting any one technique. We’re getting as many experiences as possible handling clay. Clay body used will be red terracotta clay.
Learn to manipulate terracotta clay and create basic forms. Your work will be returned to you fired and
glazed with a nice white glaze.
When: November 15, 5:30-8pm
Cost: $85 per class

November:
This month we will feature a watercolor workshop led by art educator Jenny Davidson. We will focus on making small cards and tags that can be used for gift giving, entertaining, or sparking your creativity. Come and unleash your inner artistic talents, no experience necessary! As our days become shorter, darkness makes space for creativity – you can take these watercolor techniques with you into winter - and continue to practice with a warm cup of tea. What better way to step into winter than music, art, and a warm cup of tea. A short lesson will be followed by open studio time in an inspiring atmosphere.
The open mic welcomes all performers of music, spoken word or other art forms. Please share! Our featured performer will be local singer songwriter Asia, who will share her beautiful songs on ukulele.
We'll get started at 7:30pm. We are asking for a $10 suggested donation to help cover the costs of art supplies, etc.
You're welcome to BYOB, but we will also have snacks and drinks available for additional donation.
All gender identities are welcome to attend!

3rd Saturday Circle Singing
Circle Singing
Side Rail Collective ~ Art Studio is now hosting 3rd Saturday Circle Singing with facilitator, Debby Boland Watt.
We will take off SINGING! Debby gives each choral part, building the piece as she goes. Free form and spontaneous, these beautifully complex pieces are then held as soloists sing over the patterns. The layering of rhythmic and melodic patterns, call and response, vocal percussion and free improvisation require attentive listening skills and a firm grasp of many rhythmic forms.
Debby is happy to join Side Rail Collective as its dedication to creating an inclusive and vibrant environment for creatives is just what Circle Singing is all about.
Join us for these 3rd Saturday Circles
Each class is $52.50.
Get all the dets on her website
*Afterwards, we will head downstairs for a slice of pizza...please join us!!

When: October 18, 5:30-8pm
Cost: $85 per class

a dim flicker - Reception | Art Walk
This hauntingly lush exhibition explores ideas of decay, softness, and fragility. Using various symbols, references to nature, use of color and texture the artist in this group exhibition create work that requires precision and the ability to relinquish it.

Raku: 2 sessions; clay handbuilding & glazing/firing
Raku: 2 sessions; clay handbuilding & glazing/firing
Raku is an ancient Japanese firing technique. This workshop includes two sessions. The first session we learn beginning hand building techniques with raku clay. Syd provides inspiration and help with technique.
A week or so later, in the second session, we glaze our pieces and submit them to the kiln’s flame in a fire of transformation. The pieces come out of the kiln very hot, and are smoked in sawdust and scrubbed clean once cooled.
Outstanding colors and wild crackle patterns emerge. It’s terrific to experience this process together and share it amongst the group.
When: October 11th, 5:30-8pm (handbuilding) AND October 20th, 11:30-4pm (raku firing)
Cost: $125 for the 2 sessions
